Most individuals and families pay for assisted living through their personal bank accounts or savings funds, also known as private pay. Other family members might also contribute to cover the costs. Here are a few other common methods people use to help pay for assisted living: Long-term care insurance.

Long-term care

Long-term supports and services can be provided at home, in the community, in assisted living, or in nursing homes. Individuals may need long-term supports and services at any age. Medicare and most health insurance plans don't pay for long-term care.

There is no right age for making this transition. Deciding to move into a senior living community is an individual choice, but you might be surprised to know that communities have residents with ages starting at just 62 years old. Residents can live in these communities well into their nineties and beyond.

As of August 1, 2021, assisted living facilities in Minnesota are subject to new regulations. The Minnesota legislature passed regulations providing standards governing how housing and services in assisted living facilities may be provided, with a focus on protecting residents' health, safety, well-being and treatment.

However, there generally has to be a very good reason for a nursing home to evict a resident. Nursing home residents have significant rights that are established by both federal and state law, and these facilities cannot simply kick somebody out because they want to.
