Brits to bask in 32C as Met Office shares 10-day weather forecast (2024)

The UK is set to see temperatures rise into the 30Cs in some parts of the country but by next weekend a low pressure could see temperatures return into the high teens for many

Brit sun lovers are set to bask in 32C heat over the coming days but further ahead the outlook is a lot less settled.

The movement of the jet stream to the north of the UK is the reason for the current warm spell by allowing air to move up from the Continent and this is the picture for much of this week.

But by the weekend a low-pressure system that has been hovering over the Atlantic is likely to bring some rain and return temperatures towards average for the time of year.

“An increasingly hot week of weather to come,” said Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern who said that the mercury could rise to 29C today followed by a warm night that could make sleeping uncomfortable.

He continued: “By Wednesday it is hotter again across the south with 30C possible across the Midlands, the South East and East Anglia, mid to high 20Cs elsewhere. That could spark a few thunderstorms for Wales and the South West which certainly is an area of the forecast we will be keeping a close eye on.

"Further north a lot of cloud for northern England, much of Scotland and certainly a fresher feel compared to the start of the week but some sunshine will return to western Scotland and Northern Ireland and it is mainly dry here.

“And then on Thursday there are some question marks as to how hot it will get in the east of England, anywhere between 28C and 32C depending on how quickly cooler air returns from the west associated with this front which will bring spells of rain or showers and it will certainly cool down towards the north west as the breeze picks up and frequent showers arrive.”

Met Office forecaster Jennifer Bartram pointed to a change in the weather by Thursday and by the weekend the highs are likely to be around 20C with some cloud and rain that could carry on into next week. Weather charts from Ventusky predict the temperature to be in the high teens for the middle of next week.

“Here is that low pressure moving in for Thursday and that is when we are starting to see a change in our weather, it is going to be breaking down. We will hold onto the heat for a little while for some of us though,” said Ms Bartram.

"Into the weekend and there is still a bit of uncertainty about what the weather wants to do. It could be that the high pressure starts to build in again and it becomes a bit more settled (…) what we do know in the short term is that the weather will be breaking down by the end of the week so turning a little bit more unsettled with some cloud and outbreaks of rain and temperatures back down to where we would expect them to be.”

The Met Office forecast from June 28 to July 7 states: "Fresher conditions with a westerly wind from the Atlantic, and changeable weather is most likely to prevail through much of this period; the hotter and more humid weather experienced by the south prior to this will most likely have been pushed away into the nearby Continent.

"However, there remains at first, a small risk that these conditions could linger for a time in the south, with the change to fresher weather more erratic with a chance of more widespread thunderstorms. This aside, western areas are likely to see the most frequent rainfall, whilst eastern areas remain drier, and a trend towards more generally settled weather through the period is probable. Temperatures expected to be around to a little above average."

Met Office forecast from today to July 7

Today:

Areas of low cloud, mist and fog will lift to leave a largely dry and settled day with bright or sunny spells. Feeling very warm, locally hot in light winds. However, the far northwest will be cloudier with patchy rain.

Tonight:

Remaining largely dry this evening with late sunshine, then clear spells, areas of low cloud and mist overnight. Cloud thickening in the far west and northwest though giving patchy rain.

Monday:

Scotland and Northern Ireland will see some showery rain on Tuesday. Elsewhere most places will stay fine with light winds and further very warm or hot spells of sunshine.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Cloudy and cool in the northeast on Wednesday. Warm, or hot sunshine elsewhere. Showers possible in the southwest. Rain likely moving east on Thursday. Turning brighter, showery, fresher for Friday.
