Elizabeth Warren warns of efforts to limit abortion in states that have protected access (2)

BOSTON (AP) — U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Wednesday warned about additional attempts to curb access to abortion — efforts that she said could ultimately target states like Massachusetts that have worked to protect abortion rights.

Warren held a field hearing in Boston along with fellow Democratic Sen. Edward Markey, also of Massachusetts, to highlight some of those concerns following the decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2022 to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Elections are not wasted on the young in EU. Some nations allow 16-year-olds to decide in June polls

  • By RAF CASERT - Associated Press

Teens as young as 16 from five countries will be able to vote in the June 6-9 European Union elections. They add a slice of vigor and life to the campaign in some EU nations and they are a sought-after part of the electorate. Youngsters will need to overcome political apathy if they want a stake in the future of the bloc, where issue like climate and social exclusion will have a big impact on the outcome. Some see the lowering of the minimum voting age as a ploy to get an easy vote from unwitting teens who have barely outgrown childhood. Some vehemently disagree.

  • SYDNEY

Two more players could be involved in the Australian soccer match-fixing case that has already resulted in three Macarthur FC players being charged. Midfielder Kearyn Baccus appeared in court Thursday to face charges relating to an illegal betting plot to receive yellow cards during A-League matches in return for payment. He was arrested on May 17 along with team captain Ulises Davila and teammate Clayton Lewis. Documents produced in court revealed that two other players are accused of participating in a criminal group. Football Australia issued a statement saying it was aware of the allegations but added that one of the players whose identity was revealed in court was not a suspect in the case.

Google to invest $2 billion in Malaysian data center and cloud hub

  • AP

Google plans to invest $2 billion in Malaysia, developing its first data center and a Google Cloud hub in the latest big foray by a U.S. tech giant in the Southeast Asian country. The news came after Microsoft recently said it would put $2.2 billion over the next four years in Malaysia’s new cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim hailed Google’s investment as a sign of faith in Malaysia's governance and economy. Anwar said the investment is expected to add $3.2 billion to the economy and create 26,500 jobs by 2030. The investments are a coup for Anwar as he seeks to consolidate his strength against a strong Islamic opposition.

After nation's 1st nitrogen gas execution, Alabama set to give man lethal injection for 2 slayings

  • By KIM CHANDLER - Associated Press

Alabama is set to execute a man convicted of bludgeoning an elderly couple to death 20 years ago to steal prescription drugs and $140 from their home. Jamie Ray Mills is scheduled to be put to death Thursday evening at a south Alabama prison. While Alabama carried out the nation’s first execution using nitrogen gas earlier this year, a lethal injection is planned for Mills and remains the state’s main execution method. He was convicted of capital murder in the 2004 slayings of 87-year-old Floyd Hill and his 72-year-old wife Vera Hill. Prosecutors said the victims were attacked with a hammer, tire tool and machete.

Iran opens registration period for the presidential election after a helicopter crash killed Raisi

  • By JON GAMBRELL - Associated Press

Iran has opened a five-day registration period for hopefuls wanting to run in the June 28 presidential election. The winner will replace the late Ebrahim Raisi who was killed in a helicopter crash earlier this month with seven others. The election comes as Iran grapples with the aftermath of the May 19 crash. There's also heightened tensions between Tehran and the U.S. and protests including those over the 2022 death of Mahsa Amini that have swept the country. The 85-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei maintains final say over all matters of state. But presidents in the past have bent the Islamic Republic of Iran toward greater interaction or increased hostility with the West. The registration that began Thursday will run for five days.

4 Pakistanis killed by Iranian border guards in remote southwestern region, Pakistani officials say

Pakistani officials say Iranian border guards opened fire at a vehicle carrying a group of Pakistanis, killing four people and wounding two others in a remote area in the southwest. The incident happened near the border village of Mashkel in Baluchistan province on Wednesday. Government administrator Sahibzada Asfand said it was unclear why the Iranian forces opened fire. Local police said Thursday the bodies of the four men had been handed over to their families. There was no comment from Tehran or Pakistan's Foreign Ministry. Security forces on both sides often arrest smugglers and insurgents who operate in the region.

A violent, polarized Mexico goes to the polls to choose between 2 women presidential candidates

  • By MARK STEVENSON and MARÍA VERZA - Associated Press

Mexico goes into Sunday’s election deeply divided: friends and relatives no longer talk politics for fear of worsening unbridgeable divides. Drug cartels have divided the country into a patchwork quilt of warring fiefdoms. The atmosphere is literally heating up, amid a wave of unusual heat, drought, pollution and political violence. It’s unclear whether Mexico’s next president — both major-party candidates are female — will be able to rein in the underlying violence and polarization. Soledad Echagoyen, a Mexico City doctor who supports President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s Morena party, says she can no longer talk about politics with her colleagues, noting “there have been personal attacks already."

'Star Trek' actor George Takei is determined to keep telling his Japanese American story

  • By YURI KAGEYAMA - Associated Press
  • Updated

The incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans, including children, who were labeled enemies during World War II, has traumatized and galvanized the Japanese American community over the decades. For George Takei, who portrayed Hikaru Sulu aboard the USS Enterprise in the “Star Trek” franchise, it’s a story he is determined to keep telling at every opportunity. Takei has a new picture book out about his family's wartime experience, called “My Lost Freedom." He says he fears the lessons about the failure of American democracy still haven't been fully learned, even among Japanese Americans, and especially in younger generations.

Gil, Verdugo propel Yankees to 2-1 victory over Angels as Volpe extends hitting streak to 21 games

  • By JOE REEDY - AP Sports Writer

Luis Gil struck out nine and won his sixth straight start, continuing a record run by the starters, Alex Verdugo homered and the New York Yankees bounced back with a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Anthony Volpe extended his hitting streak to 21 games with two hits, tying the longest run in the majors this season. He also scored a run. Logan O’Hoppe had a solo shot for the Angels, who have dropped four of five. After the Yankees had an unassisted double play turned against them in the first inning due to baserunner interference by Juan Soto and a second-inning rally end due to Anthony Rizzo being hit by a batted ball from DJ LeMahieu, Verdugo drove an elevated sinker by Tyler Anderson into the right field stands.

VP Harris to address US Air Force Academy graduates

  • By JESSE BEDAYN - Associated Press/Report for America

Vice President Kamala Harris will speak to U.S. Air Force Academy graduates on Thursday. It will be her first address at the ceremony after President Joe Biden spoke to the cadets at last year's commencement. Graduates will become second lieutenants in either the Air Force or Space Force. In his 2023 speech, Biden thanked the cadets for choosing “service over self." And after greeting graduates with salutes and handshakes, the president took a spill on stage, but was uninjured. The event in Colorado Springs will wrap with cadets pitching their caps into the air under the roar of the world-renowned Thunderbirds.
