Here are some additional tips to get started:

  • Spend at least eight weeks training leading up to your 5K race. This usually begins with walking or a combination of running and walking. By the end of the eight weeks, you should be able to complete a 5K without walking.
  • Don’t run every day. Your body requires rest and various athletic activities to gain endurance and speed while helping prevent injury. Alternate your running days with other physical activities, like strength training, swimming, pickup games, bicycling, and more.
  • Use at least one or two days for rest each week. That means no designated running or cross-training. Of course, you may want to enjoy other leisurely physical activities. The goal is simply not to overdo your training.
  • Increase the amount you run per week by 10 percent. That means next week, you should run 10 percent farther or longer than you did this week.
