What is lidocaine hydrocortisone used for? ›

Lidocaine and hydrocortisone combination is used to relieve pain and itching caused by conditions such as hemorrhoids, sunburn, minor burns, insect bites or stings, poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, minor cuts, or scratches. Lidocaine belongs to a group of medicines known as topical local anesthetics.

Lidocaine belongs to the family of medicines called local anesthetics. This medicine prevents pain by blocking the signals at the nerve endings in the skin. This medicine does not cause unconsciousness as general anesthetics do when used for surgery. This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription.

While lidocaine provides relief from discomfort through the effect of numbing the affected area, hydrocortisone provides relief by reducing redness and itchiness through decreasing inflammation.

This medication is used to treat a variety of skin conditions (such as eczema, dermatitis, allergies, rash). Hydrocortisone acetate reduces the swelling, itching, and redness that can occur in these types of conditions. This medication is a mild corticosteroid.

To make sure it's safe for you, tell your pharmacist or doctor before using this medicine if: you've ever had an allergic reaction to lidocaine or any of the other ingredients. the skin where you need to use the cream has cuts, rashes, eczema, bleeding or scabs, or if the skin feels sore.

Topical hydrocortisone products like Cortizone-10® stop these reactions and temporarily reduce itching from minor skin irritations.

Do not use it on skin areas that have cuts, scrapes, or burns. If it does get on these areas, rinse it off right away with water. This medicine should only be used for skin conditions that your doctor is treating.

Using hydrocortisone for a long time without stopping can mean some of the medicine gets into your blood. If this happens, there's a very small chance it can cause serious side effects, such as adrenal gland problems, high blood sugar (hyperglycaemia), or problems with your eyesight.
