Last week, I was initiated into the University of Arizona’s Beta Alpha Psi with so many motivated peers. Along with that, I’m honored to be elected and take on the role of VP of Membership for ASAB this upcoming semester.

Oral Chagas’ disease is as important as its vectorial or vertical transmissionNorman L. Beatty tells us in ChagasChat about his work in a study with other researchers, and their conclusions on the transmission routes in Colombia.New insights into the oral transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi are being discovered in Colombia, which can help bring increased awareness and a better understanding of this neglected tropical disease to reduce the burden of Chagas’ disease throughout Latin America.Increasingly cases of acute Chagas’ disease are found in areas where the disease has not been documented, and triatomine vectors are not naturally found, thus raising suspicion for oral transmission. Within the Amazon Basin, oral transmission is now considered the principal cause of acute Chagas’ disease.See the full publication: https://lnkd.in/dJGf5Bex#chags #beatchagas #oraltransmission #healthforall

It a study undertaken at the University of Cincinnati it was concluded that:The current data indicates an association of a decreased incidence of concussion among football players during the competitive seasons where vision training was performed as part of the preseason training. We suggest that better field awareness gained from vision training may assist in preparatory awareness to avoid concussion causing injuries. Future large scale clinical trials are warranted to confirm the effects noted in this preliminary report. You can read the study here:https://lnkd.in/e4zizyjz

We’ve launched our ‘Call for Abstracts’ for our 5th Annual Conference. As the RJC celebrates its 25th anniversary, it is an excellent time to acknowledge the sector’s achievements, face up to the present challenges and imagine future possibilities. Thus, the theme of the 5th annual RJC conference is Restorative Reflections: A blueprint for a restorative future. We believe that everyone should live in a truly restorative society. Within criminal justice this means empowering the people most affected by giving them the right to access restorative justice. But a restorative society is much more than that. We also need to focus on our communities, workplaces, schools, colleges, hospitals and, well, any institution that contains people.Over the past 25 years, the restorative sector has made significant strides, but we know that more can be done moving forward. This is why, during this year’s conference, we want to explore the future of all things restorative! Read more about submitting your abstract at 👉 https://lnkd.in/eiSR3YnS

I wanted to take a moment during Glycogen Storage Disease Awareness Week to share a highly personal post. In the process searching for answers to our idiopathic (unexplained) ketotic hypoglycemia within our family, it was discovered that we carry multiple GSD genes - a common finding among families impacted by idiopthic pathological ketotic hypoglycemia in Ketotic Hypoglycemia International. This phenomenon is called synergistic heterozygosity. Want to read more about synergistic heterozygosity in inborn error of metabolism? Check this paper out: https://lnkd.in/edDUf8VFThe question of whether we have GSD or not remains unanswered, but I have faith that experts like Terry Derks and David Weinstein, M.D., M.M.Sc. will unravel the complexities of symptomatic carriers one day. In the meantime, during this Awareness Week and throughout the year, all of us in the idiopathic ketotic hypoglycemia community stand together in solidarity with the Glycogen Storage Disease communities - together we are stronger. Please take a moment to watch the inspiring video featuring a close friend and fellow advocate family of ours; Jamas LaFreniere and Margot LaFreniere, parents to little Sophie and the founders of Sophies Hope Foundation (CureGSD1b).https://lnkd.in/eT4ASJZT
