A simple note on weakness (2024)

It is a well-known saying that weakness is the truth of life. No single person can say that they do not have any weaknesses. Even if someone claims otherwise, they lie to themselves and the entire world. A person’s weakness can be defined as a state in which they lack some qualities. These weaknesses can be in different facets of life. The weakness of a person can be physical, mental, or even economic.

What is a weakness?

Superficially, a weakness in a person can be stated as simply a lack of certain attributes. When we think of liability, the first thought that comes to our minds is the shortcoming within us. Some examples of weakness can be our anger issues, lack of social skills, or even certain physical qualities that we do not like about ourselves. However, a weakness in a person is more than that.

Many times, the weakness of a person can be their honesty. Usually, it is kept in the list of positive qualities that humans have. However, there are instances when even honesty can be a shortcoming. To have a better understanding of this, let’s take an example. Suppose there is a situation that requires you to lie to attain a positive consequence. If you are a sincere person, you will not be able to go against your habit. Hence, the consequence will not be in your or another person’s favour. Moreover, in certain instances, it may even be the reason for harm to people dependent on you for lying.

A very general and not so critical example of this situation can be planning a surprise for someone. If you are too honest, you will not be able to hide your plans from the person for whom the surprise is being planned. So, the weakness of a person doesn’t always have to be a negative quality of theirs. Weakness can be a positive attribute as well.

Types of weaknesses

The weaknesses can be divided into many categories. A person may have one or more than one type of weakness. So, let us know some of the weaknesses of a person that can exist. Weakness can be broadly classified into four major types-

  • Physical Weakness
  • Mental Weakness
  • Economic Weakness
  • Professional Weakness

Physical Weakness

Physical weakness can be defined as fatigue or lack of energy to perform any function. There can be various causes of the physical weakness of a person. The chief causes of physical weakness or fatigue include:

  • Lack of exercise
  • Various kinds of injuries, especially the ones that restrict movement
  • Ageing
  • Diseases are a prominent reason for fatigue. Some diseases that cause fatigue are diabetes, stroke, or heart diseases.
  • Pregnancy; women often feel fatigued during pregnancy

Mental Weakness

Mental weakness can be defined as a state of mental feebleness. The mental weakness of a person can be due to mental exhaustion. It usually occurs during excessive stress or when a person overworks. Mental fatigue can also result due to a lack of sleep. Some symptoms of mental weakness in a person are-

  • Depression. A person usually becomes mentally dull due to depression
  • If a person is suffering from mental weakness, they are likely to have frequent anxiety.
  • Undoubtedly, there is an evident lack of energy.
  • The mental weakness of a person can cause difficulty in memorising, thinking, or even talking to people.

Economic Weakness

A person is economically weak when they do not have sufficient money to satisfy their lifestyle. Economic weakness is more prominent in emerging countries. In such places, economically weak people are way more than in developed countries. The economic weakness of a person can sometimes cause them to lack even the basic necessities of life. Economic weakness can be majorly due to:

  • Lack of employment
  • Lack of education or educated people in a family
  • People are often financially weak due to large families. Usually, the family is very big, and there is just one earning member present in the family. Hence, the earnings cannot satisfy the needs of all people.

Professional weakness

The professional weaknesses of a person play a pivotal role in their career. They significantly determine whether a person will get the job they will be interviewing for or not. So, one needs to be very careful while answering a question about their professional weaknesses. However, some professional weaknesses examples can be-

  • Not taking criticism in a healthy manner
  • Lacking the ability to work with a team
  • Always feeling the need to be correct
  • Being bossy
  • Excessive self-criticism

How to state your weaknesses in job interviews?

Answering a question about your weaknesses can be crucial, especially when seated in an interview. However, you cannot simply blabber your shortcomings as it may result in losing the job. Hence, here are a few points to consider while answering this question.

  • Firstly, you need to identify your weakness. Never tell the interviewer directly that you have no weaknesses.
  • Try to convert your shortcomings into your strengths. For instance, tell them that since you are a perfectionist, it takes more time for you to get done with any assignment as you ensure that the project is of perfect quality.
  • Do not reveal too much or get too personal about yourself. This can make the interviewer instantly uninterested.
  • Lastly, always go through the job description and make sure that you do not have any weaknesses that are of critical importance to the job role.

Conclusion

The weakness of a person plays a pivotal role in their life. Our weaknesses are the truth of our lives. While some of these weaknesses are unamendable, we can eliminate many of our weaknesses. We can change our attitudes, anger issues, and social skills. Moreover, we should not let our weaknesses define us. Lastly, one should learn to conquer their weaknesses and convert them into their strengths.
