Long Law Firm's office will be closed today in celebration of Mardi Gras.In other news, Long Law Firm attorneys Kris Kirkpatrick, Jamie Watts and Mike McKay joined the festivities for the 75th anniversary of Washington Mardi Gras. The event dates back to the 1940’s when Louisianans working in Washington DC brought the celebration of Mardi Gras to their new home.LLF’s namesake, Russell B. Long, was instrumental in the event’s history. The “Russell Long Era” of Washington Mardi Gras began in 1957 when he worked to expand the event to its customary three-day celebration.Senator Long created the Mystick Krewe of Louisianans. The inaugural krewe included political luminaries such as Barry Goldwater and Hubert Humphrey, along with admirals, generals and influential businessmen. In addition to the krewe, Mardi Gras floats, New Orleans musicians, Louisiana food and extravagant decorations became commonplace.Senator Long served as Captain of the Krewe from 1960-1975 and again in 1985.The Washington Hilton hosts the event each year and is affectionately referred to as the “65th Parish” due to the numerous Louisiana participants.Washington Mardi Gras now also serves as an opportunity to showcase Louisiana’s industries, with several economic development events conducted throughout the days leading up to the Saturday night ball. Louisiana Senator John Kennedy served as chairman of the 75th Washington Mardi Gras and selected the theme, “Louisiana:The Most Interesting State in Louisiana”.Former New Orleans Saints quarterback and Super Bowl XLIV MVP Drew Brees reigned as King of the 2024 ball, along with Camille Morrison, a Baton Rouge native and student at Texas Christian University.Their royal court included princesses selected by members of Congress, festival queens from across Louisiana and krewe members.Kris Kirkpatrick’s granddaughter, Laura Jane Kirkpatrick, was one of the princesses representing her hometown of Baton Rouge.
