Jean grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a dual degree in Mathematics and English. Her quick wit and her love of words were a joy to those who knew her well. She was a high school math teacher before her children were born and later did substitute teaching once they were in school. She was very involved with multiple terms as room mother, ALTA ladder mother, booster club president, Girl Scout leader and PTA president sometimes involving her own children and sometimes filling a need for other children. Jean's husband of sixty-nine years was chair of the Anesthesiology Department of Emory University's School of Medicine for twenty-six years.

As an active member and past president of the Emory University Women's Club, she was very involved with the renovation of the Houston Mill House and raising money to support it. She taught Sunday school at the Central Congregational Church and was a committee chairman of OASIS (Organizations Assisting Schools in September) an organization that helped to prepare students, parents and teachers, separately and together, for the integration of their schools. She remembered having breakfast with a group at a Rabbi's apartment that overlooked North-side High School and watching out the window on the first morning of Northside's integration. Jean took great satisfaction in participating in this important change in the schools. She also did tutoring for Dream Makers, a foundation that provides community-based educational, recreational, and therapeutic services to children with special needs throughout Metropolitan Atlanta.

Her active membership in PEO also added to educational opportunities for women. She is survived by her brother, Hulbert Pinkerton, of Madison, Wisconsin; daughters Kathryn Steinhaus Car-michael of Marietta, Carolyn Pinkerton Steinhaus of Atlanta, Barbara Steinhaus of Clarkesville, and Elizabeth Steinhaus of Sandy Springs; and son, William Steinhaus of Milton.
