Pella Windows at a Glance

Pella was founded in 1925 by Pete and Lucille Kuyper as a small, family-owned company in Pella, Iowa. It was originally called Rolscreen and focused on manufacturing and selling self-designed roll-up window screens. Over the years, it slowly rolled out new products, like Venetian blinds, deluxe casem*nt windows and removable wood grills.

The first Pella window store opened in 1985. Since then, the company has become a billion-dollar business, complete with 10,000-plus employees, 17 manufacturing locations and over 200 showrooms in America. Nearly every year, Pella expands or enhances its product lines. In 2022, the company snagged the No. 8 spot on Fast Company’s Most Innovative Design Companies list. Today, Pella is nearly synonymous with high-quality, long-life windows, doors and accessories.

Check the limited lifetime warranty carefully. It is tied to the buyer, not the property, so this becomes a problem when homes with Pella windows come up for sale. In the event of a sale, the warranty is automatically replaced by a transferable 10-year limited warranty that starts from the date of sale to the original owner. Simply put, if the re-sale is more than 10 years later, the new buyer has no warranty. The warranty may also be voided by any drilling, painting or tinting that damages the windows or the window frame.

It’s worth noting that not all Pella pricing is readily available on its website and costs can change, but the following can give you a good idea of price ranges. Consider these numbers when speaking with an installation pro, but always double-check costs near you because they may vary based on time of year, cost of living, size of window and other factors.

Pella Windows Installation

Installation work is always done by a Pella-certified contractor. You can schedule work from a skilled installation specialist through the showrooms. Once the installation date is decided, the installer will provide preparatory instructions and offer a completion date.

To order Pella windows, there are three options:

Visiting a Pella Showroom or Lowe’s Store

Pella has 200 showrooms in 47 states. Pella is also sold in over 1,700 Lowe’s locations throughout the U.S. Search for the nearest showroom and schedule an appointment. In-store, customers can browse Pella’s catalog and touch and measure the full-scale window and door models before placing an order.

In-Home Consultation

Consultations can be in-person or virtual. Free in-person consultations last 90-minutes. A Pella expert will measure all the windows, share designs and materials choices and explain expected timelines for manufacturing and installation. For the virtual session, homeowners must provide measurements and pictures of the windows throughout the home.

Buying Online

If you measure properly, then it’s easy to select and order Pella windows, doors or replacement parts online. However, some customers have complained about sizing issues and ill-fitting windows. So, it may be best to let a Pella expert conduct an in-house consultation to take responsibility for properly measuring each window for the perfect-sized replacement.

Where Pella differs from its competitors is in customer service satisfaction. Despite its strong reputation for quality products, many customers complain that minor issues become major. With little resolution, measuring errors snowballed into installation problems and installation delays for some customers. Many competitor companies have stronger customer reviews.

That being said, customer experiences can vary from installer to installer and by location so look at specific reviews for Pella in your location and be sure to speak with any installer about your concerns.

Is Pella Windows the Right Window Installation Company for You?

If you are looking for high-quality, energy-efficient and durable windows, this is the company for you. Among the wide range of materials and styles available, most customers find the perfect look for curb appeal and interior comfort.

Methodology

To determine the best window replacement companies ranking, the Forbes Home Improvement editorial team analyzed the nation’s 16 top-serviced companies, with each company’s star rating determined by evaluating a variety of metrics, including:

Customer Experience (15%)

The Better Business Bureau provides excellent company snapshots related to overall customer experiences with listed companies. We examined how each company ranks with the BBB based on its grade, whether or not it was accredited, the number of years in business and its reviews. More importantly, we looked at each company’s complaints and resolutions to reviews ratio.

Material Options (25%)

By offering more than one material option, replacement window companies create possibilities for their customers related to quality and cost. We examined the number and type of materials each company offered. We added points for each kind on a one-for-one basis between vinyl, wood, fiberglass, aluminum and specialty options like Fibrex and Ultrex.

Warranty Protections (15%)

Consumer warranty protection indicates a company’s product confidence—especially in the building materials market. We analyzed each company’s warranties and awarded points based on the shortest and longest glass and non-glass warranties offered by each contender.

Window Types Available (24%)

Not all homes need the same kind of windows. The best window companies offer multiple window types that could include single-hung, double-hung, casem*nt, awning, bay or bow, hopper, gliding or rolling, fixed or picture, folding, corner, garden, and several specialty shapes. We awarded each company between 1% and 3% of this score for each type it offers.

Color Choices (14%)

The number of color percentage points each company scored was divided into interior and exterior options and added together to equal its color choice score.

Expert Score (7%)

Because the replacement window business is full of variables, some companies stand out despite drawbacks elsewhere. Our team of expert evaluators awarded up to seven additional percentage points for companies that exceeded normal expectations for categories like customer service excellence, warranty quality instead of just quantity, installation expertise and knowledge sharing with its customers, among other discretions.
