Abstract
This chapter discusses how Black New Yorkers in the city were disproportionately imperiled whether by an outbreak of typhoid, cholera, smallpox, tuberculosis, pneumonia, influenza, rickets, dysentery, or bronchitis. In the mid-nineteenth century, death rates for Black city dwellers matched mortality rates for enslaved people in the South. The chapter mentions McCune Smith, who was one of the two Black doctors in New York and was tapped by Gerrit Smith to be an agent for the land giveaway. Some illnesses that seemed to target city Blacks were so little understood that they had no name, but McCune Smith saw how they rampaged. The chapter emphasizes how there was no part of urban life where caste did not rule with the confidence of law as complexion pinned the young Black men of New York City to the worst-paid jobs.
